The Japanese acrobat troupe featuring performers from the Hayatake family were one of two such distinguished theatrical groups given permission to travel from Japan to the West in 1866 during the Meiji Restoration period. The troupe was sponsored by Richard R. Risley Carlisle and Thomas Maguire. They arrived in San Francisco in late 1866, debuting at Maguire's Academy of Music opera house on December 7, and continued to perform at the venue until departing for New York in late January of 1867. At some point during their U.S. peformance tour the troupe was billed as Professor Risley and T. Maguire's Imperial Troupe of Japanese. (Cf. "Professional entertainers abroad and theatrical portraits in hand" by Aya Mihara, Old Photography Study, no. 3, 2009; and "The impacts of the performances of Maguire and Risley's Imperial Japanese Troupe on Mark Twain's lectures in San Francisco and New York in 1866 and 1867" by Mariko Takashima, The Bulletin of the Faculty of Representational Studies, v. 14, 2014.)
